Opéra - Champs Elysées

[]

8°-9° arrondissements

The 8th arrondissement (VIIIe arrondissement), located on the Right Bank, is one of the 20 arrondissements of Paris, France. Along with the 2nd, and 9th arrondissement, it hosts one of the business centers of Paris, located around the Opéra. As of the 1999 census, more jobs were based in it than in any other arrondissement. It hosts many places of interest, such as the Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde. It also hosts the Élysée, the French Presidential residence.
The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris that stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly the Place de l'Étoile, at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. It is the linchpin of the historic axis (L'Axe historique) leading from the courtyard of the Louvre Palace, a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares on a route leading out of Paris. The monument was designed by Jean Chalgrin, 1806; its iconographic program pitted heroically nude French youths against bearded Germanic warriors in chain mail and set the tone for public monuments with triumphant nationalistic messages until World War I.
